"The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves."As I have been preparing to mentor vanguard this year, I have been thinking about what mentoring really is. In life, everyone needs a mentor to guide them, whether their mentor is a family member, a friend, or Heavenly Father. So what makes a good mentor? This quote suggests that a mentor invites someone to create themselves. Some mentors mentor certain things that they have mastered. Last year when I was asked to mentor poetry I felt pretty confident that I was close enough in mastering poetry that I could teach it, however, I soon felt otherwise. I learned way more last year, about poetry, then all the years I've been writing it.
So this year they asked me to help mentor apprentice class, with a few other youth. This time, instead of focusing on one thing (poetry) I have to focus on many things, somethings which are my strengths and somethings which are my weaknesses. So what I want to know is, how do you mentor something you yourself need to be mentored in?
Luckily I get to work with some of the most amazing youth that I know. I have met lots of people through the years but you can't get much better than Vanguard. They make me laugh, cry, sing, dance, act, draw, mentor, and go crazy. But they never cease to inspire me.
